2011 Camp Summary

Kaleidoscope Half Day Music Summer Camp I: July 11th-15th

This year, we had 14 children registered for our Half Day Music Camp which was instructed by Wing Chow. The children worked with Wing on different things each day to learn about the musical concepts. The kids participated in activities such as singing games, musical games, choral works, instrument playing, rhythm exploration and creative movements.

On the final day of camp, the kids presented a short performance for friends and family demonstrating what they learned throughout the week. They worked on several songs both chorally and through instrumentation including "Dit Te Moi" a French and English song performed by all of the children for their finale performance.

Kaleidoscope Drama and Arts Summer Camp II: July 18th-22nd

For our second week at Kaleidoscope Summer Camp, we had Wing Chow and Krysia Bower as the instructors for our Drama and Arts Camp. We had 16 children registered in the morning session and 10 afternoon session. Both morning and afternoon groups worked on the same play: "TheEmperor's New Clothes" by Perry.

The children worked with Wing to learn the play and songs. The kids also had the opportunity to learn about script analysis and exploration and the five basic elements of acting. They worked with Krysia to design and create backdrops, props and costumes for the plays. Professional theatre artist Stevie Jay was the week's special guest, leading the children in drama and improv games.

At the end of the week, there was an in-house performance upstairs at the Port Carling Community Centre where all parents, friends, family (and a dog or two) were invited to come in and watch the children perform the play they all worked so hard on!

Kaleidoscope "Muskoka Memories Mobiles" Summer Camp III: August 2nd

Making mobiles was Magical! This year at our Mobiles Camp, we had 9 children registered for the full day. Krysia Bower was the instructor and taught the kids how to make Mobiles with a variety of supplies including bits of wood, pipe cleaners, paper, sparkles, paint, and much, much more! All of the children quickly caught on and were soon making mobiles upon mobiles! At the end of the day, each child took home about eight different mobiles to enjoy!

Kaleidoscope "Wanna Be a Muskoka Idol?" Summer Camp IV: August 3rd

La, la, la, la! This year, we had 5 kids in our "Wanna Be a Muskoka Idol?" summer camp. Instructor Wing Chow lead the children through the basic techniques of singing, including proper breathing, diction, tonality, expressions, and much more. Throughout the morning, the children played a variety of musical games and engaged in interactive activities which helped them to learn performance skills and taught them to use their voices with confidence!

Kaleidoscope "Have Nerves for a Play Audition?" Summer Camp V: August 4th

No more nerves here! This year, we had 5 children in our "Have Nerves for a Play Audition?" summer camp. Wing Chow was the instructor who introduced the children to the principles of acting through a step-by-step progression of fun activities. These activities included scene analysis, character interpretation, physical movement, speech work, emotional expressions and improvisation. The workshop ended with applications of the techniques to monologues, preparing the kids with all of the tools they'll need for a play audition!

Kaleidoscope "Muskoka Memories Masks" Summer Camp VI: August 5th

Magnificent Memorable Masks! This year, we had 16 excited kids in our "Muskoka Memories Masks" summer camp. Krysia Bower lead the children in creating masks out of plaster bandage, wood, and various craft materials. They explored sculptural and decorative techniques such as casting, additive sculpture, painting and collage. Each child made a variety of masks which they were able to take home as a keepsake at the end of the day.

Kaleidoscope Music & Art Summer Camp VII: August 8th-12th

For our last week at camp, we had 11 children in the morning session and 14 children in the afternoon session. Instructors Wing Chow (Music) and Krysia Bower (Visual Arts) paired up to make the final week of camp a huge success!

Throughout the week, Wing worked with the kids to teach them basic music concepts through musical games, creative movements, explorations of body percussion and percussion instruments. The kids were taught how to read rhythm and musical notation and even got to play the Djembe! By the end of the week, the kids were accompanying children's songs and folk music with different percussion instruments and were playing the tonechimes with notation!

Krysia worked with the children to explore their creativity through a variety of art activities. Throughout the week, the kids worked on mask making, wood block printing, drawing, painting, and much more!
